‘Variety is the spice of life’ is a trending term that we hear nowadays. If we look around everyday, we can see a wide range of varieties in everything. We wear different clothes everyday. We can choose from a variety of cuisines to dine. Similarly, there is variety in the nature and we call this variety as ‘biodiversity’. And these variety of animals, plants, insects, etc work together to maintain harmony in nature.
It is getting common for us now to read in the newspapers or see in the TV news that a particular species is getting extinct and measures are being taken to recover that particular species. The loss of even one animal in jungle by non-natual means can cause a disturbance in the ecosystem. The animals and plants are interconnected to each other by food chain in the ecosystem. The problem of loss of animals or plants is increasing day by day. But the people who are taking efforts to save these endangered species are very less.
Some people tend to think so what, if that species goes extinct? It would not affect our day-to-day life. It would not cause us any trouble. We should invest our time and energy in more dangerous real time problems such as pollution, global warming, depletion of fossil fuels, etc. They think that these are the problems which require immediate attention and not the loss of particular species of plants or animals.
In my personal opinion, both the factors are important in life. Any particular species cannot be ignored and left to be extinct. Collective efforts should be taken not only to solve this problem, but also to reduce pollution, global warming, etc. We all can contribute even with small steps to conserve the environment.
